Okanagan Chapbook Series The Okanagan Chapbook Series is an occasional compilation of short texts and pictorial materials on topics of special interest to the principles - recreation and amateur sport, history and heritage, arts and crafts, leisure pastimes - printed in limited quantities and made available to friends of the publisher, and through selected purveyors of fine publishing. ![]() Like the amateur letterpress printers of previous generations, we depend on primitive technology to produce our works. In our case, desktop inkjet printers painstakingly output page after page, which we watch carefully to ensure that the words and pictures are reproduced as best possible. In the end, the result is not unlike that of platen letterpress machines printing hot lead type and copper plates, an effect from which we gain great pleasure. This process allows us to publish works of merit in limited editions at reasonable prices. We hope you will support our efforts. Volume 1:A GENTLE INTRODUCTION TO THE FINE ART AND RECREATION OF FISHING THE FLY Carol McDonald & Dean Unger Fly fishing catches hold of the imagination. This Chapbook - the first in the series - celebrates, in words and pictures, the art of 'fishing the fly'. Hand-tied flies are shown and described in detail, quotations from famous and infamous fisher-folk are juxtaposed, and the whole carefully crafted into a delightful package. A treasure for readers and fly-fishers both. 32 pages, plus cover. Published October 2002 in a limited edition of 125 copies, signed and numbered by the writers. Price per copy: $24.95. Production: The design and art direction is by Robert MacDonald EMGDC, award-winning book designer. His fine press work (notably with Dreadnaught Press, 1973-1982) is in the collections of libraries and museums around the world. The text and cover pages were inkjet printed at our workshop in Lake Country, British Columbia. The paper was made from flattened bleached trees. The sheets were folded by hand, and the books handsewn using antique braided fishing line that was once used by Kelly Bishop, a legendary B.C. fisherman, to take a twenty-five pound Rainbow Trout from Kootenay Lake. The typefaces used are Fatslab by Dave Cushman for display; the personal handwriting font of MattB (both from the Chank foundry); and Joanna by Eric Gill from Monotype for the text. The photographs were taken by Dean Unger on a Kodak DX3600 digital camera. Forthcoming Volumes in the Series: The Girls of Winter When it comes to puck chasers, we all have our favourites and heros. We've discovered new ones. White on Green Chasing the small white ball is a sport and pastime steeped in history. We reveal the stuff of legends
